How purchase price and capital gains are calculated in the administered regime
Under the administered regime you do not have to calculate taxes yourself: we do it all. You pay tax only on real earnings (called capital gains), that is the difference between what you receive when you sell and what you spent to buy your crypto-assets. For this reason, the initial purchase price is essential: the more precise and documented it is, the less you risk paying taxes on money you have not earned.
Where the purchase price comes from
- Crypto-assets bought on Young Platform: we already know the purchase price and record it automatically. Fees do not enter into the calculation: they do not increase the purchase price and do not reduce the proceeds from the sale.
- Crypto-assets transferred from other platforms or wallets: we do not know the original price. You can prove and certify it by uploading the relevant documents. At the end of the verification, the recognised price will be visible for each deposit in the Taxes & Reports section.
- Uncertified deposits (without receipts or proof of purchase): if you do not provide documents to prove how much you originally paid for the transferred crypto-assets, the law requires us to consider the purchase price as 0 €. This means that, at the time of sale, the tax will be applied and calculated on the entire value of the proceeds, and not just on your actual profit.
You can certify the purchase price of deposits only by certain deadlines, after which 0 € becomes final: deadlines and rules are in What is deposit certification and why do it.
An example
To understand the impact of certification, let us consider this example: you buy a crypto-asset for 100 € on another platform, you transfer it to Young Platform and subsequently you resell it for 150 €.
- With a certified purchase price: the tax will be applied exclusively on the actual profit of 50 €.
- In the absence of certification: the purchase price will be considered equal to 0 €, consequently the tax will be calculated on the entire sale value of 150 €. The example applies if you only own the deposited units: if you also have units of the same crypto-asset purchased on Young Platform, the purchase price is calculated using the weighted average cost: read How is the price calculated if the purchase of the same crypto-asset took place in multiple tranches at different prices?.
When we calculate the tax
Tax is calculated and withheld automatically at the time of each tax-relevant operation, at the statutory rate: what these operations are is explained in What is a tax-relevant operation. How capital losses are offset is explained in How capital losses are managed between the declarative and managed tax regimes.
The calculation of capital gains and losses starts from 1 January of the year the regime enters into force: for those who join in 2026, the calculation runs from 1 January 2027.
Withdrawals to external wallets
Withdrawing to a wallet or account you own is not a tax-relevant operation, but first you must verify ownership: without verification the withdrawal remains suspended. Read How to verify non-custodial personal wallets.
